Garden City N.Y. – The Adelphi men's basketball team returned to the Center of Recreation and Sport for their fifth Northeast-10 conference matchup against Pace University Wednesday evening. The Panthers led almost the entirety of the way, picking up an NE-10 win of 68-55.
Three members of the Brown and Gold (3-4, 1-4 NE-10) tallied double figures in points, led by
Anthony Libroia who totaled 13 points on 5-10 shooting. Both
Duane Morgan and
Michael Coffey chipped in 12 points, while Morgan tallied a double-double by pulling down 10 rebounds.
Ryan DeNicola led all players with 12 boards, while falling one point short of a double-double himself.
Pace (2-6, 0-4 NE-10) was led by 18 points from Kyle Pearson and 17 from Shelton Mickell.
To kick off the first half, Morgan got the Panthers on the board at 19:08 with a 3 point shot. In the course of four minutes, the Panthers rallied a double figure point streak to hold their lead. The Setters' leading scorer in the half, Mickell contributed 10 of the 17 points. Over the next five minutes, the Panthers racked up 10 points ending at 6:56. While Pace did not have the opportunity for points for the next five minutes, Jaylen Mann made a three-point shot for the Setters, but missed two shots in key possessions resulting in a halftime lead of 34-17 for Adelphi.
Morgan set the tone for the Panthers with a dunk 15 seconds into the second half. The Setters kept a scoreless pace before a three point shot made by Kyle Pearson at 17:23. In the following four minutes, Pace scored 10 points but it was not enough to dent the gap. Holding their 16 point lead, the Panthers challenged the Setters for the duration of the half. Pace closed the point spread to 11 with a Mickell layup. At 4:27 freshman,
Michael Coffey shot a three pointer for a 14 point Panther lead. Pace missed two score opportunities with 3:40 left in the game. For the remainder of the half, the Setters got no closer than 11 points for a 68-55 Adelphi win.
The Brown and Gold return to action on Saturday, December 6 when the University of New Haven comes to Garden City for a 3:30 pm NE-10 contest.
