Brookville, NY - After advancing to the 2014 NCAA Field Hockey Tournament for the first time since 1981, the Adelphi University field hockey program dropped a 3-1 decision to the Pioneers of LIU Post in the first round. The hosts will travel to Louisville, Kentucky as they join Stonehill College and Westchester University in the final four field.
Scoring the only goal for the visitors was
Olivia Nowokunski in the second half, after LIU Post had taken a 2-0 lead in the first half. For the hosts, Stephanie Ruhle scored twice and Kaycee Zelkovsky scored the third and final goal, sealing the deal and allowing Post to advance to the Final Four.Â
Pioneers lit up their side of the scoreboard first, as Ruhle found the back of the cage off an insert from Lyn-Marie Wilson. Heading in at halftime, the Panther defense worked hard to keep the Pioneer lead to just two after Ruhle struck again with less than ten to play in the first half.Â
Coming out of the locker room, the Panther offense fired back as a scramble in front of the net deemed in favor of the visitors allowing
Olivia Nowokunski to find the back of the cage. A penalty corner granted to Adelphi at 21:35 gave the Panthers another shot, but they were unable to capitalize as LIU's defense was able to shoot the ball out of their territory.Â
The Brown and Gold end their season at 14-7 and will go down in program history as NCAA participants for the first time under the direction of head coach
Gloria O'Connor.Â
