Garden City, N.Y. - With straight-set wins at No. 1 through No. 4 singles, the Adelphi University women's tennis team claimed victory over the visiting Falcons of Bentley University on Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers (12-2, 10-0 NE-10) put themselves in the lead in the match behind victories at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. With
Charlotte Moreau unavailable, the Panthers were forced to shuffle their lineup; as a result, freshmen
Stefani Lineva and
Rebecca Fakas stepped into the No. 1 doubles slot for the first time in their collegiate careers and claimed an 8-1 win over Ludmila Yamus and Rachel Petrini. To complete the switch,
Katarina Barborikova played at No. 2 with
Joanna Haich, and the pair recorded an 8-5 win. The Falcons (4-4, 4-4 NE-10) picked up their first point of the match with a win at No. 3 doubles over
Bianca Bernal and
Maria Fernanda Bruzon Gutierrez.
The quartet that led the way in doubles also did so in singles play. Lineva picked up another win over Yamus as she defeated her at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Barborikova followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Catherine Gianino, while Haich eased past Petrini, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. While the Falcons picked up wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, Fakas' 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 gave the Panthers their final point.
