Garden City, NY – Sophomore
Caelan Hueber headed in the game-winner in the 87th minute to propel the Adelphi University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win against visiting Northeast-10 Conference and nationally seventh-ranked Southern Connecticut State.
The first half consisted of each team trying to gain offensive momentum and sharing portions of the attack. The first shot was not taken until the 15th minute as freshman
Federico De Oliveira put a cross just wide of the goal.
Adelphi (10-5-1/8-4 NE-10) ended the first half with a 6-5 lead in shots; however, the Owls (13-2/10-2 NE-10) put two of their attempts on target. Yet, the Panthers nearly got on the board in the final seconds as senior
Juan Aguiar had his shot blocked in front of the net with the following rebound coming after the buzzer sounded.
The balanced attack from both teams continued into the second half. After playing a ball off an Owl defender to force a corner kick,
Diego Zuniga crossed the corner into the middle of the box to find Hueber's head followed by the right side of the net to put the Panthers up in the final minutes.
Goalie
Ahmad Salamah made four saves to preserve the shutout victory, his fifth cleansheet of the year. The Panthers finished with a 13-9 advantage in shots while the Owls controlled five corners compared to allowing two.
Prior to the start of tonight's match, Adelphi honored the eight seniors on this year's team. The class includes
