Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University women's basketball team played host to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Assumption College Saturday afternoon in a non-divisional contest. The Panthers edged past the Greyhounds 95-93 to break their three game losing streak. With the victory, Adelphi improves to 13-3 overall and 7-3 in conference play. Assumption drops to 10-6 and 6-5 in the NE-10.

Leading the Panthers offensively were seniors Sade Jackson and Jessica Kitrys who had 26 and 20 points, respectively. They combined for nine rebounds as teammates Kelly Mannix and Jenna Halaby found themselves in double-figures with 14 and 12 points.

The Greyhounds were led by Shannon Ray, who contributed 22 points and four assists as teammate Cailtin Ackerman was responsible for 17 points of her own. Despite the loss, the team shot 72.4 percent in the first half alone and above 50 percent for the entire game.

Assumption was first to jump on the scoreboard as they quickly led 4-0 under a minute into the game. A timely triple by Mannix would bring the Panthers within one as the next ten minutes would experience four more ties, the last one occurring at 10:29, at 26. The Greyhounds took advantage and swung the momentum in their favor as they led Adelphi for the remainder of the half.

With as much as a 12-point margin with under two minutes left in the first half of the game, the Blue and White would lead Adelphi by 11 going into the locker room, 56-45, on a jumper by Ray. Mannix accounted for 12 points in the first half shooting a perfect 5-5 from the field, 1-1 from downtown and 1-1 at the line.

The Brown and Gold would be first to strike after the break, on a Jackson-Kitrys combo, still trailing Assumption 47-56. Back-to-back free throws by Assumption's Kelly Conley, with 11:56 on the clock would increase the margin to 14 points, the Blue and White's largest lead of the game. A layup by Jackson with 8:24 remaining would strike the 14-2 run in favor of Adelphi to ultimately give them their first lead of the half, 82-81.

Back-and-forth fouls and chances at the charity stripe resulted in four ties and five lead changes but Calli Balfour's 1-2 free throws would seal the deal, giving the Panthers their third win of 2014.
