Volleyball Takes Two in Philadelphia

The Panthers picked up a 3-2 win over the host Rams and a 3-0 victory against Nyack.

Philadelphia, PA - The Adelphi University volleyball team traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for a non-conference tri-match against the host Rams and Nyack College on Saturday, September 28. The Panthers opened up the day with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-8) sweep of Nyack, and then squeaked out a 3-2 victory against Philadelphia, improving their overall record to 7-6.

Kaitlyn DeStefano and Mandy Stanislovaitis led the Adelphi attack with nine kills each, while the defense was paced by Stanislovaitis, who had a team-high seven digs. Katie Bryson captained the offense with 22 set assists and added in a team-high three service aces.

The Panthers made quick work of Nyack, picking up straight set wins of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-8. Adelphi led 9-6 in set one and out-scored Nyack 16-9 and followed that up with a 20-11 run in game two, that turned a five all tie into another Brown and Gold win. The third set was all Adelphi as the Panthers opened the game with a 13-2 run and eased their way to a 25-8 win.

Adelphi vs. Philadelphia
Haley Blunt and DeStefano provided a one-two punch for the Panthers against Philadelphia with 19 kills and 14 kills respectively. Sierra Crook and Amanda Borges led the Brown and Gold in digs with 18 and 12 digs each, while Bryson compiled a game-high 47 set assists.

Philadelphia moved out to a quick 4-0 lead in game one, and held a 20-13 edge before a 10-3 run by the Panthers tied the contest at 23 all. Adelphi would close out the set by scoring three of the final four points, taking a 1-0 match lead on a Ram error. Adelphi turned another tie into a win in the second set, turning an 8-8 knot into a 25-13 win, courtesy of a 17-5 run that was capped by a Borges kill.

The tables were turned in game three as the Rams took a 13-13 game and out scored Adelphi 12-8 to pull within one game of tying the match with a 25-21 win. Philadelphia would force a fifth and deciding game by scoring 13 of the final 18 points in game four to collect a 25-15 victory and tie the match at 2-2. However, the Ram momentum was short lived thanks to a Blunt kill that sparked a 5-0 run in the fifth game, putting Adelphi ahead 8-3 on the way to a 15-10 game win and a 3-2 match triumph.
