Newark, Del. - The Adelphi University volleyball team wrapped up play at the Wildcat Regional Invitational on Saturday, September 21 with contests against Holy Family and NYIT in Newark, Delaware. The Panthers picked up a 3-1 win over the Holy Family, but squandered a 2-0 lead against NYIT, falling 3-2. With the split the Brown and Gold return to Garden City with a record of 4-6.
Adelphi vs. Holy FamilyThree players posted double figure kill totals, led by
Kaitlyn DeStefano's 11, while
Colleen Raga and
Haley Blunt chipped in 10 apiece. Defensively, Blunt and
Sierra Crook led the Panthers with 16 digs each, and
Katie Bryson kept the offense running smoothly with 34 assists.
Adelphi stormed out to a 9-2 lead in game one and used that cushion to cruise to a comfortable 25-19 win. The Panthers took another early lead in game two, 7-4, but Holy Family battled back and knotted the game at 16. However, a Raga kill set Adelphi on a 9-4 run that put the Brown and Gold up, 2-0 thanks to a 25-20 game two win.
The Tigers turned the tables on Adelphi in game three, pushing out to a 5-0 lead before the Panthers woke up and used a 7-2 run to tie the game at seven. However, Holy Family answered with a 10-5 run to take control of the game, 17-12 on the way to a 25-20 win. Holy Family jumped on the Panthers early in game four, taking a 7-3 lead, but a 9-2 Adelphi run put the Brown and Gold in front, 12-9 on the way to a 25-20 set victory and a 3-1 match win.
Adelphi vs. NYITDeStefano powered the Panther attack against NYIT with a game-high 18 kills, while
Amanda Borges added 10 and
Shelby Stoner chipped in nine. Blunt and Crook were the defensive pillars again with 16 and 14 digs each, while Bryson managed 12 digs and 40 assists.
The Panthers took control of the match with victories of 25-21 and 25-20, but the Bears turned the tables and clawed their way back into the contest, using two straight 25-21 game wins to knot the action at two. Adelphi tied the game early in the deciding fifth game on a NYIT attack error, but the Bears responded with 7-2 run that put the Brown and Gold in a 10-5 hole. The margin proved too big for Adelphi, as NYIT collected the game win, 15-11 and took the match, 3-2.

Kaitlyn DeStefano was named an All-Tournament selection for her play during the two-day Wildcat Regional Invitational.
Up NextAdelphi returns to action on Tuesday, September 24 when they play host to cross island rival LIU-Post at 7:00 pm in the Center for Recreation and Sports.
