North Andover, MA – The Adelphi University women's tennis traveled to Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack College on Sunday afternoon and came away with a tightly contested 5-4 victory. With the win, the Panthers improve to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the NE-10 while the Warriors drop to 4-11 and 4-5 in conference play.
The Panthers trailed early as
Maria Toft suffered a hard fought 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 defeat in the top spot and
Michelle Gurda fell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. However, the Panthers took the final four singles matches, highlighted by
Gaby Adia and
Samra Redzematovic each rallying from a set down at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Adia bested Alyx Barne 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, while Redzematovic bounced back from losing a first set tiebreak to defeat Mollie Fitzgerald 6-7, 6-2, 6-1.
The Warriors almost clinched the match in doubles play, as the home team needed to come away with all three victories. Toft and
Bianca Posa suffered a close 9-7 defeat at first doubles, while Gurda and Redzematovic fell 8-5 in the second slot; nonetheless, Adia and
Taylor King paired up for the Brown and Gold and delivered the clinching 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, April 9 when they travel to Le Moyne College for a Northeast-10 Conference match.
