Garden City, N.Y. - The fourth-seeded Adelphi University women's tennis team played host to the #5 Bentley University Falcons in the first round of the Northeast-10 Tournament on Tuesday. The Panthers blanked the Falcons by a 5-0 score to advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Panthers improve to 13-6 overall while the Falcons drop to 9-9.
The Panthers swept the Falcons in doubles play, lead by
Maria Toft and
Bianca Posa at first doubles. The duo dominated their opponents with an 8-1 victory.
Gaby Adia and
Taylor King recorded a similarly one-sided 8-2 victory at third doubles while
Michelle Gurda and
Samra Redzematovic toughed out an 8-6 victory at second doubles.
As a result, the Panthers only needed to secure two singles victories to clinch the match, and Toft and Adia did just that. Toft recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory at top flight singles while Adia recorded a nearly-identical 6-0, 6-1 victory in the fourth spot to put Adelphi into the semifinals. Gurda and Haich were each leading their opponents by a set when play was called, while fifth and sixth singles did not need to take the court.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, April 18 when they travel to #1 Southern New Hampshire University for a 4 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference semifinal match. The Penmen bested the Panthers by a 5-4 decision during the regular season on March 30.
