Flushing, N.Y. – The men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in a tri-match against Baruch and Queens College last night at the Student Rec Center on the campus of Queens College. The men defeated both foes to add two wins to their record while the women fell to both CUNY teams.
The men took top honors in six of the nine individual swim events to power their way to a 57-50 victory over Queens College and a 60-35 win over Baruch.
Michael Mayer earned three of those first place finishes after besting the field in the 100 breaststroke, 200 IM and 100m backstroke with times of 1:04.49, 2:03.39 and 59.36 respectively.
Peter D'Ortenzio finished first in the 50 freestyle in 22.24 while
Michael Giovanniello took top honors in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:19.71. The relay teams of
Carlos Ballon,
Ryan Walpole,
Joseph Grippo and
Daniel Henne combined for a runner up finish in the 200MR in 1:55.49 while
Chad Ankers,
John Bellotti, D'Ortenzio and Walpole also placed second in the 200 freestyle medley with a time of 1:30.87, narrowly being edged by Queens' 1:30.59.
For the women,
Danielle Dreiss chalked up the lone individual wins after placing first in both distance events. The freshman broke the school record en route to winning the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:09.24. She then went on to best the field in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:29.79. The squad lost to Queens by a score of 65-46 and dropped the meet to Baruch as well, 54-51.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, November 23 when they travel to Kings Point, N.Y. to take on the Midshipmen of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 11am.
