Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University swim team played host to SUNY Purchase on Thursday, October 24 in their season opening swim meet in historic Woodruff Hall. The men opened the season with a 53-42 victory, while the women picked up a 61-33 win.
The women picked up eight individual wins on Thursday, led by double winners
Kate Harney and
Heather Miller. Harney picked up wins in the 1,000 freestyle (12:42.20) and the 100 yard freestyle (59.47), while Miller was tops in the 50 yard freestyle (26.85) and the 100 yard backstroke (1:08.66).
Danielle Dreiss,
Laura Vanella,
Gabrielle Terzano and
Morgan McCurdy were also individual winners, claiming valuable points for Adelphi in the 200 yard freestyle (2:06.04), the 200 yard individual medley (2:29.96), the 100 yard butterfly (1:08.97) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:51.47). Vanella, Dreiss and Terzano were joined by
Rachel Garry on the fastest 200 yard medley relay team, taking top honors with a clocking of 2:03.12.
The men managed five individual first place showings, getting two each from
Gerry Theophilidis and
Zachary Mazur. Theophilidis touched the wall first in both the 1,000 yard freestyle (11:02.39) and the 100 yard freestyle (51.01), while Mazur was first to the finish in the 200 yard freestyle (1:56.89) and the 100 yard 100 yard butterfly (57.49).
Michael Mayer was responsible for the Panthers other individual victory, out distancing the field in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:19.91. Adelphi also picked up a relay first, as Mayer, Theophilidis and Mazur teamed with
Chad Ankers in the 200 yard freestyle relay, posting a first place finish in a time of 1:33.35.
