Easton, Mass. - The Adelphi University women's tennis team's undefeated Northeast-10 Conference run came to an end on Wednesday as the Panthers battled Stonehill College to a 5-4 loss at the Charles Watt Tennis Courts. Both squads now stand at 11-1 in the league on the season, but Adelphi still boasts the most wins of any NE-10 team with a 16-4 record.
The Panthers battled for every advantage against the Skyhawks, taking three singles matches, but it proved not enough as Stonehill won two out of three doubles events and sent Adelphi home with an NE-10 loss for the first time this season.
Maria Toft,
Michelle Gurda and
Samra Redzematovic all captured wins at the top three singles positions, and Toft partnered with
Joanna Haich for a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles. Toft cruised to the most commanding win of the day to the tune of 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Gurda fought through three sets to take home the 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles.
The Panthers close out the regular season on Saturday when they travel to American International College the winless Yellow Jackets at 12:30 p.m. Stonehill ends regular season play at sixth-place Merrimack on Friday, and a loss to the Warriors plus an Adelphi win would give the Panthers sole possession of the top seed in the league, pending third-place Southern New Hampshire University's last two matches against Saint Michael's and Bentley.
