Box Score

Garden City, N.Y - Earlier tonight, the Adelphi men's basketball team played host to the Greyhounds of Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Despite holding a nine point advantage at the half, the Panthers could not hold on in the second frame and dropped a 55-52 decision. With the loss, Adelphi falls to 2-5 on the season and 1-3 in the NE-10 while the Greyhounds remain undefeated at 7-0 and 5-0 in the conference.

The Panthers were led by a 20 point performance by John Calarco on 7-11 shooting from the field while teammate Bradley Simpson added 13 points. RJ Samuels led the team with nine rebounds. The Greyhounds were led by three players in double figures, with Tim Beinert scoring 15, Ronson Quick adding 12 and Terrence Bobb-Jones with 11.

Assumption scored first in the contest and went up 4-2 before the Panthers ripped off an 8-0 run, capped with consecutive threes from Calarco, to take a 10-4 lead. An 11-5 run by Assumption brought the score to 16-14 with fewer than nine minutes to go in the half.

The Panthers seized control from there and went on a 14-2 tear over the next 5:35, with multiple buckets from Simpson, Samuels, Eddie Sullivan and Calarco to bring their lead to 30-16. In the final 1:35, Assumption outscored the Panthers 5-2 to close the gap to 32-23 at the half.

A Simpson layup opened the scoring in the second half, but the Greyhounds poured in eight unanswered points to pull within five with 16 minutes remaining. The Brown and Gold would see their lead shrink to four points behind a layup from Beinert and an alley oop from Bobb-Jones but could not get any closer to evening the action. Four points from Simpson and a foul shot from Duane Morgan brought the Panthers' lead back to seven at 44-37, their largest since halftime.

Assumption shot back and went on their largest run of the game, a 10-0 streak which gave the visitors their first lead since the opening minutes of the game; the Greyhounds held a 47-44 advantage with five minutes left in the game. The Panthers broke a six minute scoring when Sullivan knocked in a pair to bring the deficit to one, 47-46.

A three-point play by Assumption's Beinert gave his team a four point lead with just over three minutes to go and a layup from Bobb-Jones moments later gave the visitors their largest lead of the game at six points. A pair of free throws from Calarco and another by Sullivan brought the Brown and Gold to within three with under two minutes to play.

The Panthers were forced to foul and the visitors went three for four at the line to bring their lead to three with just a few seconds remaining. Adelphi had a chance to tie the score on the last play after a timeout; however, the last second three-point attempt by Simpson fell well short.

The Brown and Gold will return to the floor on Tuesday, December 4th when they host Pace University at 7:30 p.m.
