Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi women's basketball team opened their 2012-13 season against LIU Post in a non-conference contest earlier this afternoon. Despite tying the game with less than 30 seconds left in the game, the Panther's last second attempt fell short and they dropped a heartbreaker to their cross-town rivals, 82-81. With the loss, Adelphi slips to 0-1 and the Pioneers improve to 1-0.
The Panthers had four players in double digits, led by
Jessica Kitrys with 19 points.
Kelly Mannix added 17,
Sade Jackson totaled 15 and
Samantha Milhaven rounded out with 14. Milhaven led the Panthers with eight rebounds and Jackson led all players with 10 assists and added seven rebounds.
Adelphi opened up an early lead and held it throughout the early portion of the first half. From a six point lead at 19-13 coming at the 11:00 mark, the Pioneers chipped away from there and took a 23-19 lead courtesy of a three-point shot from Ashley Caggiano. A pair of free throws from
Jenna Halaby and another from
Samantha Milhaven cut the deficit to 23-22 and the Panthers continued to battle uphill from there; a late bucket by
Sade Jackson knotted the action at 28-28 with 4:22 remaining in the half.
A
Shannon Flynn three-pointer with 3:50 left in the half gave Adelphi a 31-28 lead they would not relinquish. Consecutive pairs of free throws by
Ifeanyi Ofili,
Jessica Kitrys and
Samantha Milhaven gave the Brown and Gold a 41-33 lead, their largest of the half. A layup by Kitrys put the finishing touches on the half for the Panthers and their lead grow to 43-33.
The Pioneers came out of halftime hot, and a 13-2 run gave them a one point lead. However, Adelphi responded with back-to-back three pointers by Millhaven and Jackson to compliment a
Kelly Mannix layup to them back on top 54-48.
The Panthers took a 71-67 lead with just over five minutes remaining but found themselves trailing 81-76 with under a minute to play. A layup by Jackson cut the lead to three points with 44 seconds left on the clock and a three point jumper by Mannix tied the game 81-81 with 27 seconds left. The Pioneers made one of two subsequent free throws to take a one point lead, and a last ditch three point attempt by Milhaven and layup by Jackson both fell short.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, November 14
th as they host Southern Connecticut State University at 5:30 pm.
