Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey team had its four-game winning streak snapped by a last-minute St. Anselm College goal that gave the Hawks a 1-0 victory in Northeast-10 Conference action on Motamed Field on Saturday. The Panthers slide to 4-9 overall and 3-2 in NE-10 play, while St. Anselm improves to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in the league.
After over 69 minutes of scoreless play, Canada Stewart delivered the deciding goal, chipping in a shot from the left post off a pass from Meagan Halligan. The Hawks had mustered just two shots on goal until then, and Stewart's game-winner was the only offensive attempt for the visitors in the second half.
The Panthers controlled the tempo for the majority of the game, outshooting St. Anselm 17-4 (4-3 on goal) and outcornering the opposition 11-4. A handful of offensive opportunities for Adelphi did not pan out, including a
Cassie Cabral breakaway that was kicked away by Hawks goalie Shauna Whittemore and several point-blank shots by
Molly Cuevas that ricocheted off the mark.
Whittemore made four saves in her first shutout win of the season, and Adelphi goalie
Kristine Puzio made a stop in the defeat.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they take on Saint Michael's College in an NE-10 contest at 1 p.m.
