Garden City, N.Y. – Earlier tonight, the volleyball team hosted the Falcons of Bentley University in a Northeast-10 conference contest. The Panthers put on a dominating performance and dispatched the visitors in straight sets, 25-12, 25-11, 25-11. With the win, the Panthers move to 17-9 overall and 8-1 in NE-10 play, while the Falcons drop to 9-17 overall and 4-7 in the conference.
In the first game, the Panthers surged out to a 7-1 lead, capped by a solo block from Kaitlyn Destefano that forced Bentley into a time out. The Brown and Gold dominated all areas of play in the opening game, eventually prevailing 25-12 on the strength of a service ace from
Ajsha Mekulovic.
The second set started off with back-and-forth action as neither team could manage a lead of more than two points. However, a Bentley service error gave Adelphi a two point cushion at 7-5 and the Panthers surged from there. An 11-2 run capped by a strong kill by
Samantha Rico gave the hosts a 18-7 lead. They would wrap up the rest of the set a few moments later on the strength of a
Shelby Stoner kill, 25-11.
The third game went much like the two that preceded it as the Panthers jumped out to an 8-2 lead, sparked by a kill from
Samantha Breidenbach, forcing Bentley into a time out. That did not halt the volleyball team's momentum however, as they opened up a 10-3 run to lead 18-5. Bentley responded with a 6-0 run of their own to close the gap to 18-11 and forced Adelphi to use their first time out. Back-to-back kills by
Haley Blunt and Stoner opened the Panthers' final run of the game, a 7-0 streak that was capped by a solo block from
Katie Bryson and led them to a 25-11 final set win.
Offensively, Destefano led the Panthers with eight kills, zero hitting errors and a .800 hitting percentage. Blunt chipped in six kills while Rico,
Emily Dorko and
Chelsea Overholt all added five. Bryson led all players with 23 assists and
Bianca Hernandez led the defensive effort with 14 digs.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, October 27th as they welcome the Skyhawks of Stonehill College into the Center for Recreation and Sport for a conference match at 1 pm.
