Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to the University of New Haven on Tuesday, October 23 in a match-up of the only two unbeaten teams in the Northeast-10. The Panthers and Chargers played tight, but New Haven handed Adelphi it's first conference loss, 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 17-25, 21-25). The loss snapped Adelphi's six game win streak and dropped them to 16-9 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
Chelsea Overholt posted a double-double for the Panthers with 21 kills and 14 digs, while
Samantha Rico chipped in 11 kills and
Kaitlyn DeStefano added nine.
Katie Bryson posted a game-high 46 assists, while
Bianca Hernandez led the defense with 18 digs and
Alexandra Kahen had 12 digs.
Game one was a nip and tuck affair and was knotted late in the game at 23 all on a New Haven kill. The Chargers then took the final two points of set on a service ace and an Adelphi error to pick up a 1-0 lead, 25-23. The Panthers jump started things in game two, sprinting out to a 8-2 lead, before New Haven clawed their way back into the set at 12-11. Then the Brown and Gold ripped off four straight point, capped by a Blunt kill, on the way to a 25-19 victory, knotting the contest at 1-1.
New Haven flipped the script on Adelphi in the third game, jumping out to a 10-6 lead, but the Panthers clawed their way back into the set, knotting the action at 12 on an Overholt kill. However, the Chargers responded with a 7-2 burst that gave then a five point lead, 19-14 and turned that into a 25-17 victory and a 2-1 edge. The fourth game would be the final set, but came down to the wire as Adelphi led 21-19 on a Rico hammer. But, New Haven would score six straight points on three kills and three Adelphi miscues to take the game and the match with a 25-21 win.
Adelphi returns to action on Friday, October 26 when they welcome Northeast-10 opponent Bentley University to Garden City at 7:00 pm.
