Volleyball Splits at Dowling

The Panthers took a 3-1 decision from Georgian Court, Fell to Dowling 3-2

Rico had 16 kills in Adelphi's loss to Dowling.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Oakdale, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team traveled to Oakdale, New York on Sunday, September 30 to close out the week and the month with games against host Dowling College and Georgian Court. The Panther picked up a 3-1decision over Georgian Court (25-19, 25-16, 25-27 and 25-21) and dropped a hard fought 3-2 game to Dowling (21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 14-16). The split leaves Adelphi with a 10-8 overall record.

Adelphi vs. Georgian Court

Samantha Rico led the Panthers with 11 kills, while Chelsea Overholt chipped in 10 and Kaitlyn DeStefano had nine. Katie Bryson ran the offense to the tune of 40 set assists and Bianca Hernandez led all players with 21 digs.

The Panthers opened an early 8-4 lead in game one, but Georgian Court battled back to knot the game at 12 on an Adelphi miscue. However, a Chelsea Overholt service ace sparked a game ending 13-6 run that was punctuated by a Colleen Raga kill, giving the Panthers a 25-19 victory. The second game was all Adelphi, as the Panther pushed out to a 7-2 lead and kept the pressure up, closing out the second set with a Shelby Stoner kill, 25-16.

Adelphi moved out to another lead in the third game, holding a 18-12 lead after a Samantha Rico kill. However, Georgian Court kept coming, using a 8-2 run to knot the action at 20 and it was back and forth from there, with five ties. The final tie came at 25 all and back-to-back Georgian Court kills forced a fourth game, 27-25.

The Brown and Gold came out sluggish in the fourth game, allowing Georgian Court to take a 10-5 lead, before a 7-0 Panther run put Adelphi back on top 12-10 with a Kaitlyn DeStefano kill. The game remained tight through out and was knotted at 19, but another Overholt hammer sparked a 8-4 run that gave the Panthers the game and the win, 25-21.

Adelphi vs. Dowling

Rico and Overholt led the Panther attack with 16 kills each, while DeStefano added 12. Bryson posted a game-high 49 assists, while Hernandez led all players with 26 digs.

The first of five games was extremely close, no one was able to take more then a two point lead until Dowling turned a 17-16 edge into a a 20-16 gap on the way to a 25-21 win. The second game saw Adelphi rally, taking control of an 11 all contest with a 10-3 run that made the score, 21-14 after a Raga kill. From there all the Panthers had to do was mop up, ending the game on a Rico kill, 25-19.

The Brown and Gold followed the same patterin in game three when another 11-11 contest turned in Adelphi's favor, courtesy of a 9-3 run that put the Panthers out front, 20-14. Adelphi then out scored Dowling, 5-3, ending the game on another Rico kill to take a 2-1 lead, 25-18.

The fourth game saw the Golden Lions rally, picking up a 25-22 victory on the back of a late 8-5 late surge that turned a 17-17 contest into a 25-22 Dowling win and tied the game up at two apiece, forcing a deciding fifth game. Adelphi moved out to a quick 6-2 advantage in the fifth game on a DeStefano kill. Then the momentum swung Dowling's way, as the Golden Lions took a 13-9 lead, before Adelphi rallied to tie the game at 13 all on a Rico slam. Unfortunately, the Panthers ran out of steam, dropping three of the next four points and the game, 16-14.

Adelphi returns to the court on Friday, October 6 when they travel to Pleasantville, New York for a 7:00 pm meeting with Pace University.
