Junior Claire Petersen and senior Elizabeth Fey each tallied four goals a piece to lead the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team to a 18-13 victory over LeMoyne College. The Panthers advance to tomorrow's final game at noon.
"We are extremely happy for our kids," said Head Coach Joe Spallina, now in his fourth year at the helm of the Adelphi program. "This is the first of two necessary steps that we needed to do to set us up for a national championship on our home field. .It's everything we have talked about all year."
The Dolphins struck first, as Brittany Brigandi scored unassisted in the first minute of play. Freshman Devan Crimi's back to back free position goals sparked a 6-0 Adelphi run, capped by two goals from junior Erica Devito, 4-3. LeMonye made it 5-3 at 17:10, but Petersen teamed up with Crimi to push the lead to 6-3 at 12:57.
Sophomore Demmianne Cook and Meg Brown each found the back of the net on free position shots to help push the Adelphi margin to 8-3 at 11:46. The teams traded goals in the final minutes of the first half, as the Panthers took a 9-4 lead into intermission.
In the second stanza, Fey scored the first of her four goals in the second half on a feed from Devito at 25:37. Victoria Nies snuck in a shot on an assist from Rebekah Elmer at 24:12, but the Panthers rattled off three unanswered goals over the next two minutes of play, 13-5. Brigandi sandwiched two goals between a free position goal by Cook with 22:11 left in regulation, 14-7. Fey unleashed for three of the next four Panther goals, all assisted by Petersen to give Adelphi a commanding 18-7 lead with 9:08 remaining.
The Dolphins rallied back, closing the context on a 6-0 run. Michelle Phillips accounted for three of those goals. A free position goal by Nies with 2:07 made it a 18-13 contest, but LeMoyne ran out of time as Adelphi held on for the win.
With the win, Adelphi advances to its third straight NCAA Championship contest. They will take on Limestonetomorrow at noon.
