Second-Seeded Baseball Advances To Championship With 6-2 Win Over First-Seeded Southern Connecticut

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The second-seeded Adelphi University baseball team took on the first-seeded Owls of Southern Connecticut State University this afternoon in Day Two of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Adelphi scored six runs in a four-inning span for the 6-2 victory. The Panthers improve to 33-12-2, while Southern Connecticut drops to 38-5-1.

For the Panthers, sophomore Anthony Zarrella went 3-for-5 with a run scored and one driven in, while senior Richard McCarren went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior Mike Scudero threw a complete game in the victory, giving up two earned runs and striking out seven.

The Owls got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning when T.K. Kiernan scored on a double play ground out from third after leading off the inning with a double to right.

Adelphi would even the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Zarrella drove in McCarren with an RBI single to right field.

The Panthers would take a two-run lead in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI double to left field from senior Trevor Thorstensen, followed by an RBI triple to left center in the next at-bat from graduate student Omar Velazquez. In the seventh, Adelphi would extend their lead to 4-1 on an RBI sacrifice fly to right field from freshman Richard Mejia.

Adelphi would keep the runs coming in the top of the eighth inning, pushing their lead to 6-1. Velazquez scored the first run of the inning when he crossed the plate from third on a wild pitch. McCarren knocked in the second with a sacrifice fly to left.

Southern Connecticut added a run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a Kyle Rosadino single up the middle.

For the Owls, T.K. Kiernan went 1-for-3 with a run scored, while T.J. Shea finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Chris Zbin suffered the loss, giving up three earned runs with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.

The Panthers now advance to the Championship tomorrow at noon and are still without a loss in the tournament, while Southern Connecticut will take on third-seeded Franklin Pierce University today at 4:00 p.m. in the elimination game.
