Second-Seeded Baseball Advances With 8-5 Victory Over Third-Seeded Franklin Pierce

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The second-seeded Adelphi University baseball team took on the third-seeded Ravens of Franklin Pierce University this afternoon at SUNY Old Westbury. Adelphi used a five-run fifth to pull away from the Ravens for the 8-5 victory. Adelphi now stands at 32-12-2, while Franklin Pierce falls to 36-12.

For the Panthers, junior Justin Farnum went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI, while senior Richard McCarren finished 1-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Robert Nixon threw a complete game in the win with six strikeouts.

Franklin Pierce got on the board first, scoring one run in each of the first two innings. The Ravens first run came on an RBI single from Zach Mathieu. In the top half of the second, Mike Munoz scored the Ravens' second run on a sacrifice bunt from Dan Kemp.

Adelphi got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second inning on a fielder's choice from freshman Richard Mejia. The Panthers would even the score in the bottom of the third with an infield RBI single from Farnum.

In the Ravens' fifth, Franklin Pierce would take a two-run lead on an RBI double to left center from Derek Ingui.

The Panthers answered back with a five-run fifth inning on six hits. McCarren would even the score with a two-run triple to right center. Farnum would then follow McCarren with an RBI double to left field, giving Adelphi a 5-4 lead. A Mejia RBI single followed by an RBI single from senior Trevor Thorstensen gave Adelphi a 7-4 lead headed into the sixth.

Senior T.J. Humrich would extend Adelphi's lead to 8-4 with an RBI sacrifice fly to center.

The Ravens would cut into the Panthers' lead in the top of the seventh when Mike Dowd sent an RBI double down the left field line, making the score 8-5.

For the Ravens, Dan Hennigan went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while Kemp went 2-for-3 with a run scored and one driven in.

The Panthers will now face the winner of the Southern Connecticut/UMass Lowell game tomorrow at noon, while Franklin Pierce will take on the loser of that game tonight at 7:00 p.m.
