Baseball Falls On The Road To AIC, 5-4

The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to take on the Yellow Jackets of American International College this afternoon in Springfield, Mass. With AIC down one in the ninth, the Yellow Jackets scored two for the 5-4 victory. AIC improves to 9-15 and 3-7, while Adelphi drops to 17-8-1 and 7-3 in the league.

For the Panthers, graduate student Omar Velazquez went 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored, and a home run, while senior Trevor Thorstensen finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Junior Michael Carletti took the no-decision, striking out six in six innings of work.

American International would take on early 1-0 lead in the first with a solo shot from Chris Amate. The Yellow Jackets would then respond with another run in the second on a Kyle McNiff solo home run.

The Panthers would even the score at 2-2 in the top of the sixth when Thorstensen scored on a wild pitch, which was the followed up with an RBI single to right from junior Craig Matteo.

In the seventh, Dennis Duffy would deliver a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to break the even score and give AIC a one-run lead at 3-2. The following inning Adelphi would get that run back as Velazquez crushed a two-run home run putting the Panthers back up, 4-3.

Anthony Arrichiello would drive in the game's tying run with a sacrifice fly to center. After an intentional walk to McNiff, Dillon Fontaine plated that game-winning run with an RBI single.

For the Yellow Jackets, Amate went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, while McNiff went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a home run. Sean Stevenson allowed one earned run in 1.2 innings for the win in relief.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 9, when they visit the River Hawks of UMass Lowell for a conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
