The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Yellow Jackets of American International College this afternoon in Garden City, N.Y. Adelphi scattered 12 hits for the 8-2 victory, their seventh in a row. Adelphi improves to 17-7-1 and 7-2 in the NE-10, while AIC drops to 8-15 and 2-7.
For the Panthers, graduate student Omar Velazquez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI, and two stolen bases, while senior Trevor Thorstensen went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a triple. Senior Jonathan Gonzalez improved to 4-0 with the victory today, striking out eight in six innings of work.
The Panthers scored early, putting up a three-spot in the bottom of the first inning. Velazquez scored the first run on a Yellow Jacket error after junior Craig Matteo advanced him to third on an infield single. Junior Justin Farnum drove in the second run on an RBI ground out to second, and sophomore Anthony Zarrella would send a solo shot over the right field fence for the final run of the inning.
American International would answer back in the next half inning with two runs of their own on a sacrifice fly from Dave Clark, followed by an RBI single up the middle from Cam McDonald.
The Panthers would put up another three runs in the bottom of the second, pushing their advantage to 6-2. Velazquez would drive in the first run with an RBI single to right, while Zarrella drew a bases loaded walk for the second Panther run. Freshman Richard Mejia drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
In the third, junior Lucas Romeo started off the inning with a double to left and eventually advanced to third. Senior Matt Barle would come in to pinch run for Romeo and score the Panthers' seventh run from third on a wild pitch.
Adelphi would add their final run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Velazquez drove in his second run of the game with a single to left.
For the Yellow Jackets, Anthony Arrichiello went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while MacDonald finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. MacDonald also suffered the loss, giving up five earned runs in just 1.1 innings.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow, April 7, when they travel to take on these same Yellow Jackets in Springfield, Mass. at 3:30 p.m.
