Baseball Holds Off Pace, 7-5

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Setters of Pace University this afternoon on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. Adelphi scored all of their runs in the first two innings for the 7-5 victory. Adelphi improves to 26-10-2 and 14-5-1 in the NE-10, while Pace falls to 13-23-1 and 5-14.

For the Panthers, graduate student Omar Velazquez went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run, while senior Richard McCarren went 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Senior Jonathan Gonzalez threw 4.2 innings and struck out six for the no-decision.

Pace got out to an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning on a Joe Lombardi single up the middle.

Junior Justin Farnum got things started off for Adelphi in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to right field. The next batter, sophomore Anthony Zarrella, sent a double over the left fielder's head scoring two more runs. Junior Lucas Romeo would then drive in the fourth run of the inning with an RBI single to right.

In the next half inning, Velazquez sent a towering shot over the center field fence for a three-run shot, putting the Panthers up 7-1. Pace would get one of those runs back in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly.

The Setters would then chip away at the Panther lead in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, James Pjura delivered an RBI single up the middle, making the score 7-3 in favor of Adelphi. Then in the sixth, Kyle Turnier drove in the fourth run on a sacrifice fly to to left, while Patrick Chaputian scored on an Adelphi throwing error to get Pace within two but it wasn't enough as the Panthers' bullpen held the scoreless for the remainder of the game.

For the Setters, Glen Johnson went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Pjura went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Michael Tamburino took the loss, giving up six earned runs in 2.2 innings of work.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow, April 27, when they travel to take on Pace in Pleasantville, N.Y. at 3:30 p.m.
