The Adelphi University baseball team hosted No. 6 Southern Connecticut State University this afternoon in conference contest. Adelphi pounded out 10 hits for four runs en route to the victory, 4-0. Adelphi improves to 22-10-1 and 11-5 in the league, while SCSU drops to 28-4 and 13-4.
For the Panthers, junior Craig Matteo went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while senior Trevor Thorstensen went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Senior Jonathan Gonzalez threw a complete game, giving up four hits and striking out 12.
The Panthers scored their first run in the bottom of the second inning when graduate student Omar Velazquez drove in freshman Richard Mejia with a single to left field.
In the Adelphi half of the fifth, the Panthers extended their lead to 2-0 when Matteo delivered a single up the middle, scoring Thorstensen.
Matteo would drive in his second run of the day with an RBI single in the eighth. Junior Justin Farnum would hit a triple to the right center field gap and would eventually come around to score Adelphi's fourth run on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly from freshman Chad Houghton.
For the Owls, Kyle Rosadino finished 2-for-4, while T.K. Kiernan went 1-for-3. Steve Landell took the loss, throwing five innings, giving up seven hits and striking out three.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow, April 21, when they travel to take on Southern Connecticut at 3:30 p.m.
