Adelphi University senior Robert Nixon (Welland, Ontario) and junior Claire Petersen (Wantagh, N.Y.) have been named Adelphi University Athletes of The Week for the week of March 28, 2011.
In the first game of a conference doublheader on Saturday against Stonehill, the senior right-hander threw a complete game two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in a 5-0 victory. Nixon is also 3-1 on the season with 39 strikeouts, one save, and has a 0.75 earned run average in 36 innings of work. For his efforts he was named Northeast-10 Pitcher of the Week.
Nixon and the Panthers return to action on Wednesday, March 30, when they host the Greyhounds of Assumption College at 3:30 p.m.
Petersen broke out in a big way last week, leading the team in assists and points with 16 and 21. She helped the Panthers to a perfect record of 3-0, including wins over LeMoyne, Saint Anselm and Dowling. In the Dowling win Petersen broke two Adelphi single game records for points and assists when she put up 12 points and handed out nine assists. For her efforts she was named Northeast-10 Player of The Week.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, March 30 when they host Merrimack at 7:00 pm and follow that up with a trip to Rindge, New Hampshire on April 2 to face Franklin Pierce.
