Baseball Falls To St. Rose In Extras, 6-4

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Golden Knights of the College of St. Rose this afternoon on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. With the game tied at 4-4 headed into extra innings, St. Rose scored two in the top of the 12th to hold on for the victory.

For the Panthers, graduate student Omar Velazquez went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while junior Justin Farnum finished 1-for-4 with a solo home run. Junior Michael Carletti threw the first 4.1 innings and recorded one strike out.

The Golden Knights got on the board first, in the top of the second inning, when Jevonte Osterhout scored from third base on a double steal. Adelphi would even the score in the bottom of the third when junior Craig Matteo drove in a run with an RBI ground out to third.

In the fourth, Grant Smith delivered a sacrifice fly to right to give the Golden Knights a one-run lead at 2-1. In the St. Rose fifth, Garrett Keenan gave the Golden Knights a 3-1 lead when he scored on an Adelphi throwing error. AJ Capone would then follow that up with an RBI single, pushing St. Rose's lead to 4-1.

Junior Jamie Liebowitz would drive a single into right center to score Matteo, cutting the Golden Knights' lead in half. In the bottom of the sixth, Farnum would lead off the inning with a solo shot to right field, while Velazquez would drive in the game-tying run with an RBI single to left.

The game would remain scoreless after the ninth inning and up to the top of the 12th when St. Rose put two runs on the board when Jesse Burba scored on another double steal attempt. Brian Maynard would then drive in an insurance run with an RBI double to left center.

For the Golden Knights, Osterhout went 1-for-5 with two runs scored, while Keenan went 2-for-6 with a run scored. Daniel Cavazzini picked up the win in relief, striking out one in one inning of work.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 16, when they host the Hawks of St. Anselm College in a doubleheader starting at noon.
