The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to Queens College this afternoon in a non-conference match-up before its trip to Florida. The Panthers put up a run in the first and ninth inning for the 2-0 victory. Adelphi improves to 4-3-1, while Queens drops to 1-8.
For the Panthers, graduate student Omar Velazquez finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while senior T.J. Humrich went 1-for-4 and also drove in a run. Junior Michael Carletti threw 4.2 innings, gave up four hits, and struck out two in the no-decision.
The Panthers got on the board in the top half of the first inning when Velazquez grounded out to first base and scored senior Richard McCarren who led off the game with a single.
The second and final run of the game came in the ninth inning when Humrich delivered an RBI single which plated Velazquez for the insurance run.
The Panthers' pitching staff combined for six strikeouts, four walks, and gave up six hits for the victory. Queens also left nine runners on base this afternoon.
For the Knights, Connor Burke went 2-for-4, while Michael Shada went 1-for-2 with two walks. Kyle Contino suffered the tough loss, striking out five and giving up one earned run in seven innings of work.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, March 12 when they take on Wilmington (DE) University in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Lantana, Florida.
