March 8, 2011

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. -

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Cougars of Caldwell College this afternoon in a non-conference contest. The Panthers were ahead 6-4 headed into the eighth inning but Caldwell came back to defeat Adelphi, 7-6. Caldwell improves to 1-2, while Adelphi drops to 3-3-1.

For the Panthers, senior Richard McCarren went 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, while classmate T.J. Humrich went 1-for-4 with a solo home run. Senior Jonathan Gonzalez threw seven innings in the no-decision, striking out nine and giving up three earned runs.

Both teams put up four runs combined over the first two innings with the Panthers and Cougars both putting up three runs in the second inning. In the Caldwell second, Paul Nyitray delivered a three-run home run to left field for the Cougars' runs. McCarren, fellow senior Trevor Thorstensen, and sophomore Craig Matteo each drove in a run for Adelphi to even the score at 4-4.

In the third inning, Humrich sent a solo shot over the left field fence, while McCarren scored junior Lucas Romeo with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, giving the Panthers a 6-4 lead.

The game would remain that way until the top half of the eighth inning when Tom Todaro drove a single up the middle to score one, which was then followed by a two-run RBI single from Joe O'Donnell for the eventual game-winning runs.

The Panthers had their opportunity in the bottom of the ninth when McCarren led off the inning with a single and eventually advanced to third on a stolen base and sacrifice bunt, but Adelphi left him stranded.

For the Cougars, Nyitray finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, while O'Donnell went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Mark Sarrao collected the win in relief, striking out one in one inning of work.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow, March 9, when they travel to take on former ECC-rival Queens College at 3:00 p.m.
