Baseball Holds Off Assumption, 5-3

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Greyhounds of Assumption College this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The Panthers used a three-run fourth inning to hold for the 5-3 victory. Adelphi improves to 14-7-1 and 4-2, while Assumption drops to 5-13 and 2-2.

For the Panthers, junior Lucas Romeo went 3-for-3 with a run scored, while senior Richard McCarren finished the day 3-for-4. Junior Michael Carletti earned the win, striking out six in five innings of work. Sophomore Jimmy Milani collected his fifth save of the season as well.

Freshman Richard Mejia got the Panthers on the board in the bottom half of the second inning when a solo home run to left field. Blake Youngblood for even the score in the next top half inning with an RBI infield single.

In the top of the fourth inning, Shawn Frigon sent a double to left field which plated two Greyhounds, giving Assumption a 3-1 advantage. In the following half inning, senior Trevor Thorstensen hit a bases clearing double to give Adelphi the lead back at 4-3.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, freshman Chad Houghton crushed a solo shot over the right field foul pole, pushing Adelphi's lead to 5-3, which was all they needed for the win.

For the Greyhounds, Frigon went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI, while Travis Smith went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Frank Flynn suffered the loss, giving up five earned runs in 5.1 innings.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow, March 31, when they host Bloomfield College at 3:30 p.m. in a non-league match-up.
