Baseball Picks Up Road Win At Assumption, 10-5

The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to Worcester, Massachusetts this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up with Assumption College. Adelphi scored six runs in the first three innings for the 10-5 victory. Adelphi improves to 13-7-1 and 3-2 in the NE-10, while Assumption is now 5-11 and 2-1.

For the Panthers, senior Richard McCarren went 2-for-5 with three RBI and scored a run, while graduate student Omar Velazquez went 1-for-2 with three runs scored, two RBI, and an inside the park home run. Senior Jonathan Gonzalez earned the win, giving up two earned runs and striking out nine in seven innings of work.

Adelphi would score two runs in the first, second, and third inning giving them an early 6-2 lead. McCarren drove in all three of his runs through the first three innings for the Panthers.

Velazquez would put another Panther run on the board in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to right. Freshman Chad Houghton would provide two more runs for Adelphi with a double to center. Assumption would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Drew Dombrowski single up the middle.

The Panthers would get their 10th run in the seventh inning on a Velazquez homer, putting Assumption down seven runs. Assumption would get two runs in the bottom of the ninth but it wasn't enough as Adelphi held on for the five-run victory.

For the Greyhounds, Shane Keddy finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Dombrowski went 1-for-2 with two driven in. Ben Hastings suffered the loss, giving up four earned runs in two innings.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, March 30, when they host Assumption at 3:30 p.m. on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
