The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Chargers of the University of New Haven this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up. New Haven scored two runs in the ninth inning for the 3-2 victory. The Chargers improve to 9-5 and 1-0 in the league, while Adelphi drops to 10-6-1 and 0-1.
For the Panthers, freshman Chad Houghton went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while graduate student Omar Velazquez went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Senior Jonathan Gonzalez threw seven innings and struck out six for the no-decision.
New Haven got on the board first in the top half of the fifth inning when David Wirkus sent an RBI double to right field for the early 1-0 lead. Adelphi would answer right back in the bottom half of the fifth when sophomore Thomas Torregrossa scored on an RBI double from Houghton.
The Panthers would take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Vleazquez scored from third on a wild pitch, putting the Panthers up 2-1.
The game would remain 2-1 in favor of Adelphi until the top of the ninth. New Haven would score their first run when Ryan Brockett was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded, evening the score at 2-2. The game winning run came on a fielders choice which was delivered by Shane O'Connell.
For the Chargers, Brockett finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Wirkus went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Peter Jay earned the win in relief, throwing one inning, while Mitch Rossi closed the door in the ninth for the save.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, March 24 when they travel to take on New Haven again with the first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
