Baseball Handles Dowling, 7-3

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Golden Lions of Dowling College this afternoon in a non-conference contest. With the Panthers down 2-0, Adelphi put up five runs in the fourth inning to hold on for the 7-3 victory. Adelphi improves to 2-1, while Dowling falls to 1-4.

For the Panthers, junior T.J. Humrich went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI, while classmate Lucas Romeo went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Junior Jamie Liebowitz also finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and one driven in. Senior Jonathan Gonzalez earned the win, striking out eight and giving up four hits in five innings of work. Graduate Student Omar Velazquez collected the save and drove in a run at the plate.

Dowling got on the board first, putting up two runs in the top half of the second inning. Jason Schlittenhardt drove in the first run with a triple, while Joe Candela drove in the second with a sacrifice fly.

Adelphi answered back with a five-run fourth inning. Liebowitz drove in the first run with a single to right field, while Humrich and Romeo drove in two each on a single and double, respectively.

Dowling would answer back in the fifth with another run only to have the Panthers match their run on an RBI single from sophomore Anthony Zarrella. Velazquez would drive in the seventh Panther run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

For the Golden Lions, Colin Barnathan went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Candela finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Marc Rutledge took the loss on the hill, striking out four and giving up five earned runs in four innings.

The Panthers return to action on Friday, March 4 when they host non-conference opponent Nyack College at 3:00 p.m. on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
