Senior hurler Robert Nixon struck out 10 in a complete game performance guiding Adelphi to a 7-2 win over C.W. Post. Nixon allowed no earned runs, walked only two, and gave up eight hits. After starting their trip losing twice to Wilmington, Adelphi bounced back as they ride a five-game winning streak and goes to 9-5-1 on the season, while C.W. Post drops to 1-14.
The Panthers' offense was led by graduate student Omar Velazquez and junior Jamie Libeowitz as they each collected two RBI. Velazquez batted 2-for-3 with a run scored as Libeowitz finished 1-for-3 on the day and a run scored. Senior Richard McCarren, juniors Lucas Romeo and Craig Matteo, and sophomore Anthony Zarrella each picked up one hit a piece.
Adelphi lighted the scoreboard four times in the fifth widening their lead to 5-0. Matteo belted a double down the left-field line leading off the Panthers' half-inning. Zarrella followed as he smacked an RBI double down the right-field line bringing home Matteo for a 2-0 advantage.
A few batters later, Velasquez ripped a RBI double to left scoring senior Trevor Thorstensen for a 4-0 Panthers lead. Velazquez crossed the plate on a RBI sacrifice fly by Liebowitz concluding the inning.
The Panthers added two more runs in the eighth as Liebowitz smoked an RBI double to center plating McCarren, who tripled earlier in the frame. Liebowitz advanced to third and scored on a wild pitch for the final Adelphi run of the contest.
Casey McKay's two-run double in the top of the ninth recorded the only runs for the Pioneers. McKay finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Ryan Sloane went 2-for-4.
The Panthers look to continue their winning ways as they return home on Sunday, March 20 to take on Dominican College in a non-conference contest. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
