Orlando, Fla. - The Adelphi University men's tennis team took on Florida Institute of Technology yesterday in a non-conference match in Orlando, Florida. Florida Tech cruised to an 8-1 victory. Florida Tech improves to 6-10, while Adelphi drops to 3-7.
Graduate student Sebastian Nieves won the lone match for Adelphi at top-flight singles, 6-2, 6-3.
After fighting off their counterparts, who also donned the nickname Panthers, in doubles, William Fountain and Jorge Abarca Montero showed some resiliency in singles despite dropping the first set. At No. 2, Fountain rebounded from an 0-6 opening set by winning 6-4, 6-1 in the final two. Abarca Montero showed similar toughness, notching a 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 win, his seventh of the season.
Both Michael Schmidt, this week's Sunshine State Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, and Drew Hollis emerged from their matches with a victory under their belt. Schmidt has now won five straight and Hollis' streak stands at six.
The Panthers return to action today, March 16, when they take on Florida Southern University at noon.
