The Adelphi University baseball team took on Barry University this evening in Miami Shores, Florida. The Panthers scored two runs in the top of the first inning and held on for the 3-1 victory. Adelphi improves to 7-5-1, while Barry drops to 14-8.
For the Panthers, senior Richard McCarren went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while junior Justin Farnum went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Jonathan Gonzalez threw a complete game, surrendered five hits, one earned run, and struck out 12.
Adelphi jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. The first run came off the bat of junior Jamie Liebowitz who sent a double to left center. Sophomore Anthony Zarrella would drive in the second Panther run with an RBI ground out to second.
Barry would get on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Drew Drelly hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center field.
Adelphi would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Farnum drilled a double to right center to plate McCarren to make the score 3-1.
For the Bucs, Matt Petty went 3-for-4, while Lyndon Coleman finished 1-for-3 with a run scored. Frank Szczepanik took the loss, giving up two earned runs in three innings of work.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow, March 16, when they take on C.W. Post at 4:00 p.m. in Lantana, Florida.
