The #1 ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team hosted Philadelphia University in it's home opener on Saturday, March 12. The Panthers ripped off 10 of the first 11 goals on the way to a 25-3 victory over the Rams. With the win Adelphi remains unbeaten at 2-0, while Philadelphia opens the season 0-1.
Erica Devito led all players with eight points on five goals and three assists, while both Claire Petersen and Devan Crimi tallied seven goals. Petersen's points came courtesy of five assists and two goals, as Crimi mirrored that result with five goals and two assists. Meg Brown and Marissa Mills also had productive days as each totaled three points, Brown on three goals and Mills on two tallies and one assist.
Adelphi got on the board first, as Devito opened put the first point on the scoreboard at the 26:07 mark, with an assist from Kaitlyn Carter. The Panthers Demmianne Cook scored with 25:04 on the clock to push the lead to 2-0, but Philadelphia would answer less then a minute later, cutting the lead in half.
That was when the Adelphi offense erupted, scoring 14 straight goals, and taking a commanding 16-1 lead with 3:55 left in the first half. Philadelphia would stop the bleeding at the 2:19 mark with a goal, but would enter the intermission with the game out of reach at 17-3.
The second half was all Adelphi, as the Panther defense, which forced Philadelphia in 13 turnovers, held the Rams scoreless, while the offense reeled off eight more goals, making the final count, 25-3.
Frankie Caridi earned her second collegiate win, making four stops in 60 minutes of work, while Jacqueline Williams, Kristin Jones and Tara Gangarossa led the defense. Williams caused three turnovers and both Jones and Gangarossa had two, while Elizabeth Fey led all players with 11 ground balls.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, March 23 when they travel to Syracuse, New York for a 3:00 pm meeting with #6 LeMoyne College in their Northeast-10 Conference opener.
