Men's Basketball Stopped by St. Rose, 75-62

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday, February 9 in the Northeast-10 Game of the Week. The Golden Knights jumped out to a 39-23 halftime lead, but the Panthers clawed back into the game, taking a 48-47 lead in the second period, before falling 75-62. With the loss Adelphi falls to 13-9 overall and 9-9 in the conference, while St. Rose improves to 16-7 and 11-7 in the NE-10.

Richard Byrd led the Panthers with 18 points, including hitting all eight of his free throw attempts and added four rebounds. Rob Johnson was the only other player in double figures for Adelphi with 13 points. Both Chris Ranglin and Bradley Simpson added nine points and four rebounds.

Adelphi hit the first bucket of the game, taking their only lead of the first half, 2-0. The game was tight in the opening minutes, as St. Rose slipped out to a 9-7 lead at the 16:17 mark. From there the Golden Knights opened up a 17-2 run that expanded their edge to 17 points, 26-9 with 10:44 on the clock.

The closest that the Panthers would get the rest of the half was 13 points, when two John Calarco free throws made the score 30-17, with 3:04 left. Adelphi would enter the half trailing by 16, 39-23.

The Panthers came out with some fire in the second half, immediately closing to within 12 on four straight points from Johnson. Adelphi would still trail by 12, 47-35, at the 14:02 mark when a Ranglin lay-up sparked a 13-0 Panther run. The Adelphi rally was capped by a Byrd jumper and netted the Panthers a 48-47 lead with 8:12 left in the game.

St. Rose countered the Adelphi attack with a 13-2 response, taking a 59-50 lead with 4:59 on the clock. From there the Panthers could get no closer then six, finally falling 75-62.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, February 12 when they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts for a 3:30 pm meeting with Assumption.
