Men's Basketball Drops the Dolphins, 69-49

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's basketball played host to fellow New York state resident, LeMoyne College on Saturday, February 5. The Panthers shot 51 percent in the first half, building an 18 point lead, 39-21 on the way to 69-49 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 13-8 overall and 9-8 in the Northeast-10, while LeMoyne falls to 10-11 and 8-9 in conference play.

David Akinyooye led four Panthers in double figures with 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Richard Byrd chipped in 17 points (5-8 from beyond the arc), four rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Rob Johnson added 13 points and five rebounds and John Calarco had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists in the win.

Adelphi attacked the Dolphins from the tip, opening the game with a 18-4 run over the first nine minutes of play, including three triples from Byrd and another from Calarco. LeMoyne showed signs of life, cutting the margin to eight, 20-12 at the 8:32 mark of the first half on a Nate Champion three.

However, the Panthers used a 12-0 spurt, sparked by a Johnson make from deep and capped by a Byrd three, to push their lead to 20 points, 32-12 with 4:50 remaining in the first. Adelphi led by 21 late in the half, but a Chris Johnson three-pointer sent the Dolphins into the half trailing by 18, 39-12.

LeMoyne made one final run at closing the gap in the first nine minutes of the second frame, closing the gap to 11 on three occasions, the final time on two Champion made free throws with 11:36 left in the contest. From there Adelphi's lead would balloon to as much as 25, 69-44, before settling at 20, 69-49 as time expired.

The Panthers return to the hardwood on Wednesday, February 9 when they host St. Rose at 7:30 pm in a game that will be broadcast free of charge by the Northeast-10, through the Pack Network.
