Women's Basketball Suffers 70-45 Setback At Pace

Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team squared off against the Setters of Pace University earlier this evening in Pleasantville, N.Y. A huge first half run sparked Pace as they defeated Adelphi, 70-45. Pace improves to 17-5, 12-5 in league competition, while Adelphi falls to 7-13 and 4-12.

For the Panthers, senior Ashley Caiafa netted 11 points with five rebounds, while freshman Ashley O'Connell chipped in with nine points. Sophomores Alexis Williams and Samantha Perez both contributed with seven points.

Adelphi took a 7-4 early lead, courtesy of a Caiafa trey with 15:10 left in the first half. Pace responded going by on a 28-6 tear closing the first-half. Pace tied the game at 9-9 on four consecutive points by Brittany Shields and increased their lead to seven, 14-7, on a Brittany Huggins jumper and a Kerri White three-pointer. At the 8:20 mark, O' Connell's lay-up cut the deficit to five, however, the Setters went on a 12-0 spurt over the next five minutes of play, leading 23-9. White ignited the run making two three-pointers as she had nine first half points coming off the bench.

The Setters did not let up in the second half, as they quickly turned their 19-point halftime lead into a 26-point lead just over five minutes into the second half. The closest the Panthers would get in the second half was 18, 44-26, after a bucket from Williams with 12:10 left on the clock.

Pace held Adelphi to shoot just 32.6-percent from the field and 23.1-percent from behind the arc, while they shot 40.3 from the field and 38.9 from three. The Setters owned the glass with a 46-30 advantage over AU, and forced 22 turnovers.

For the Setters, Huggins and Shields each scored a game-high 15 points in the win.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, February 5 when they host Le Moyne College at 1:30 p.m.
