Men's Basketball Grounds the Owls, 85-68

New Haven, CT - The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled up I-95 to New Haven, Connecticut on Wednesday, February 16 to avenge an early season loss to Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU). The Panthers forced the Owls into 16 turnovers during the game, and committed just eight of their own in a 85-68 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 15-10 overall and 11-9 in the Northeast-10, while SCSU falls to 12-12 and 9-11 in conference action.

Rob Johnson led all players with a game-high 25 points, including connecting on 5-8 from deep and pulled down five rebounds. Richard Byrd and David Akinyooye also reached double figures, adding 16 and 10 respectively and pulling down five boards each. John Calarco also had a strong night, hitting on six of nine field goal attempts to put 13 points on the board as teammate Chris Ranglin chipped in 10 rebounds, seven points and four assists, while Richard Harkins handed out eight helpers.

The Owls started out hot hitting their first two shots to go up 5-0 within the first two minutes of the first half. However, the Panthers responded with a quick seven points to tie the game at seven on a Johnson triple.

Southern continued it's good shooting in the opening ten minutes of the first half jumping out to an 18-11 lead with 12:17 remaining. Both teams played back and forth basketball with a total of three lead changes to close out the half with Adelphi out in front, 40-36, after out scoring the Owls, 10-6 in the final five minutes of the frame, including back-to-back three-pointers from Johnson.

Adelphi started the second half on a 12-4 run, getting eight points from Byrd to take a 52-42 lead with 14:54 remaining. The Owls crept back within five points three times, with the final charge at 7:14 remaining, but they could not stop the Adelphi response, as the Panthers closed the game with a 20-8 run.

The Panthers will close out their regular season home schedule on Saturday, February 19 when they play host to AIC at 3:30 pm and celebrate "Senior Day".
