The Adelphi University women's basketball team traveled to New Haven, Conn. this evening to take on league-rival Southern Connecticut State University. Adelphi could not overcome a 17-point first half point total en route to the 60-42 defeat. The Owls improve to 11-15 and 7-13, while Adelphi falls to 8-16 and 5-15.
For the Panthers, freshman Sade Jackson led the way with 10 points and five steals, while classmate Marielle Duryea chipped in with eight points off the bench.
Adelphi would get a bucket from sophomore Samantha Breidenbach in the opening second to take a 2-0 advantage, their only leas of the game. SCSU would answer back quickly and go up 10-2 with 15:19 remaining on a jumper from Keshia Primo. The Panthers would trail 15-8 and would then go on a 6-0 run to get within one with 5:16 left, capped off with a triple from Jackson. The Owls would re-gain a comfortable lead and extended it to double digits, 24-14, with 1:10 left on the clock. Adelphi would get a free throw from Breidenbach and a lay-up from Jackson to cut the lead to seven, 24-17, headed into the half.
SCSU would start the second half on a 6-0 run to go up 13 courtesy of two buckets from Slyvonya Moore. With 12:27 left in regulation, Adelphi would receive a jumper from Duryea, followed by a three-pointer from Jackson to get within six, 34-28, the closest the Panthers would get. After that small run from Adelphi, Southern Connecticut would open the game wide open, extending their lead to as many as 20.
The Panthers struggled from the field throughout, shooting 31.4-percent, while the Owls shot 43.9-percent. SCSU held the advantage on the glass 42-27 and handed out 20 assists on 25 field goals.
For the Owls, Shelley Pierson notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Moore and Camille Fantini each added 10 points.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, February 19 when they host American International College at 1:30 p.m. on Senior Day.
