The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled to Worcester, Massachusetts on Saturday, February 12 to face Assumption College in a Northeast-10 clash. The Panthers closed the game on a 15-5 run, turning a 60 all tie into a 75-65 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 14-9 overall and 10-9 in the NE-10, while Assumption falls to 11-14 and 8-11 in conference play.
Senior guard Richard Byrd was dominant at times for Adelphi, scoring 15 points in the first half and a game-high 25 overall. Byrd also had seven rebounds and three steals for the Panthers. Sophomore guard Chris Ranglin added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists while senior guard David Akinyooye chipped in 11 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Adelphi had the advantage for most of the first half, taking a 12 point lead off a put-back by Akinyooye with 6:30 remaining in the period, leading 27-15. The Hounds would rally, however, going on a 17-6 run and going into halftime down only three, 35-32.
The second half once again saw the Panthers start strong, taking a 12 point lead again with 11:36 remaining in the game off a tip-in by Byrd. Again, Assumption would rally, going a 16-4 run capped off by a layup, tying the game at 60 with 5:21 remaining. That was as close as the Greyhounds would come, however, as Adelphi finished on a 15-5 run, including five points from Rob Johnson, to come away with a 75-65 win.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, February 16 when they travel to New Haven, Connecticut for a 7:30 pm meeting with Southern Connecticut State.
