New Haven, CT - The men's basketball team took on the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University in their 2011-12 season opener. After halftime, both teams took to the court even at 35 a piece, but the Panthers, despite hanging tough until the end, slipped in the final minutes to drop a 67-77 decision to their Northeast-10 conference foe. With the loss, Adelphi drops to 0-1, 0-1 NE-10 while SCSU moves to 2-1, 1-0 NE-10.
The Panthers controlled a good portion of the opening half, taking a 13-11 lead at the 14:19 mark courtesy of a three ball from
Chris Ranglin.
Edward Sullivan gave his team a big momentum swing when he sunk his only bucket of the game with 7:54 left in the half to put Adelphi up by 10, their largest margin of the contest.
However, in the time it took to build that lead, it only took half the time for SCSU to make a run and close the gap. A 16-6 Owl run to close out the first 20 minutes of play leveled the playing field at 35 heading into halftime.
Four lead changes highlighted the first seven minutes of the final act until SCSU's Greg Langston knocked down a jumper to give the Owls final lead in which they would not relinquish.
John Calarco scored four of his nine points on the night with back to back jumpers in the opening stages, giving Adelphi a six point cushion. The lead would be short lived as SCSU charged right back to put themselves on the business end of the 43-41 scoreboard. In see-saw type action,
Richard Harkins, on two occasions, put Adelphi back on top with a layup and a made attempt from behind the arc while the Owls erased the lead immediately.
Duane Morgan slammed home a dunk with 13:12 to go, knotting the game at 49-49 and marking the final time the teams would be even. The remaining minutes were up and down with the Panthers crawling to within one on two occasions, but the lead eventually grew to 10 at 77-67 which is how the game would conclude.
Ranglin and Harkins led the Panthers in double digit scoring with 14 points each while Morgan chipped in with 12 of his own.
Adelphi hits the hardwood once again on Saturday, November 19 with their home opener against East Coast Conference opponent, Dowling College. Tip off is scheduled for a 4pm start. You can watch the game live at
