North Andover, Mass. - The Adelphi University field hockey team was handed its third overtime loss of the season by way of a 1-0 setback at Merrimack in Sunday's season finale. The fourth-ranked Warriors held Adelphi to just five shots on goal, and despite
Emilee Rahner's valiant defensive effort that included a career-high three defensive saves, Merrimack took the win via a Jen Otis goal four minutes into the overtime period.
The first half saw little action as Merrimack outshot Adelphi 5-2. The Warriors came out firing in the second half, however, and rattled off 17 shots but could not beat the defensive tandem of Rahner and senior goalie
Lucia Vigliotti, who made 11 saves in the contest. The squads battled to a scoreless tie through regulation, but Merrimack sealed the deal when Otis tipped in a rebound off a Katie Zubkus shot to give the Warriors the 1-0 win.
Adelphi finishes the 2011 season with a 6-12 overall record and 3-7 mark in Northeast-10 Conference play, while Merrimack wrapped up a 16-1 regular season and perfect 10-0 NE-10 campaign. The Warriors will host the NE-10 Tournament which begins on Friday, October 28.
