The Adelphi University men's basketball team hosted the Hawks of St. Anselm College this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Down two with six seconds left, St. Anselm hit two free throws to seal the win, 71-67. St. Anselm improves to 11-2 and 7-2 in the league, while AU drops to 9-4 and 5-4.
For the Panthers, senior Richard Byrd led the way with a team-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds, while sophomore Chris Ranglin and senior David Akinyooye chipped in with 12 points each. Junior Richard Harkins handed out a game-best nine helpers.
The game was close throughout the first stanza until the 9:29 mark when the Hawks went up 10, 30-20, after a jumper from Jack Keough. St. Anselm would go back and forth from a 10-point cushion to a 12-point lead over the next four minutes. The Panthers would cut the lead to 38-30 after a jumper from Byrd. With 53 seconds left, AU got to within four courtesy of a lay-up from Ranglin. Allen Harris connected on on a jumper with four seconds left to give the Hawks a 43-37 halftime lead.
The Panthers came out of the half aggressive and evened the score at 46-46 with 16:47 left in the half. With 12:34 remaining sophomore Bradley Simpson gave AU a one-point lead, 54-53. The Hawks would re-gain the lead with 9:01 left, 60-55, after a lay-up from John Mariano. St. Anselm would not lose the lead for the rest of the contest. With six seconds left and the Panthers down five, sophomore John Calarco buried a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 69-67. Thomas Baudinet would then convert two free throws to secure the win.
The Hawks shot 44.1-percent from the field, while the Panthers shot 40.3-percent. St. Anselm won the battle on the glass 49-32 over AU as well.
For the Hawks, Harris scored a game-high 22 points with four rebounds, while Baudinet added 18 points and four boards.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, January 12 when they travel to take on UMass Lowell at 7:30 p.m.
