The Adelphi University women's basketball team traveled to Manchester, New Hampshire on Wednesday, January 5 to take on Northeast-10 opponent Southern New Hampshire University. The Panthers led at the half, but trailed by three late, before knotting the game at 70 with a contested triple. However, Adelphi would eventually fall, 73-70, dropping their overall mark to 6-6 and their conference record to 3-5, while SNHU improved to 5-7 and 3-5 in the NE-10.
Jessica Kitrys led Adelphi with 16 points on an economical 7-8 shooting while Ashley Caiafa knocked down three three-pointers and totaled 15 points. Sade Jackson and Amanda Campusano finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively and Jackson added five assists.
SNHU, led by as many as five points down the stretch, but saw Adelphi whittle down the lead to one, 68-67, with 1:44 left on a layup by Kitrys. The Penmen would push the lead back to three 17 seconds later. The two teams would trade empty possessions before Adelphi called a timeout with the ball with 21 seconds to go.
Coming out of the timeout Caiafa would tie the game, 70-70 with a contested three at the top of the key with 17 seconds to go. The Penmen would come down and with 6.6 seconds left call a timeout, inbounding under the basket. SNHU inbounded the ball to Michelle DeRoma at the top of the key and her shot as time expired found the bottom of the net, securing the win for SNHU, 73-70.
Adelphi led by as many as seven in the second half and were up 61-55 with just under six minutes to go when the Penmen went on an 11-0 run to build a 66-61 edge. Jackson would make it a 66-63 game with 3:17 left but SNHU responded with another layup on the Penmen's next possession to make it 68-63 with 2:53 left.
With the Panthers leading 35-32 at halftime, the Penmen would tie the game on their first possession of the second half on a conventional three-point play. Adelphi then took control with a 7-0 run that made it 42-35 with 16:44 left on a basket by Campusano, and the Panthers would control the game for much of the rest of the half.
Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a quick 13-4 lead just over seven minutes in. The Panthers would respond by holding SNHU scoreless for over five minutes, going on an 18-0 run to build a 22-13 lead with 7:17 to go before halftime on a Caiafa jumper. The Penmen would counter with a 10-2 spurt and a three by DeRoma 4:41 before intermission put the Penmen down just one, 24-23. Adelphi took a 35-32 lead into halftime.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, January 8 when they play host to Saint Anselm at 1:30 pm in Garden City.
