Men's Basketball Misfires Against St. Michael's, 60-53

Colchester, VT - The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled to Colchester, Vermont on Saturday, January 29 to take part in a Northeast-10 contest with St. Michael's College. Adelphi closed to within three points late in the second half, but missed its final seven field goal attempts, falling 60-53. With the loss Adelphi falls to 11-8 overall and 7-7 in the conference, while St. Michael's improves to 8-10 and 6-8 in the Northeast-10.

Adelphi was led by David Akinyooye, who had a team-high 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, while Chris Ranglin added 12 points. Richard Byrd, the team's leading scorer coming into the game, tallied seven points.

Saint Michael's opened the game with seven points in the first 51 seconds, and led 12-2 just 3:26 into the game. Adelphi quickly recovered, however, as the Panthers went on a 14-2 run to take a 16-14 advantage with 8:43 left in the first half.

The rest of the period stayed close, and Adelphi led by three, 23-20 until the Purple Knights closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 28-23 lead at intermission.

The Purple Knights slowly pulled away to start the second half, and took a game-high 14-point lead, 54-40, with 5:18 left in the game. However, the Panthers answered by holding Saint Michael's scoreless for the next three minutes, reeling off 10 straight points - including seven at the foul line - to trim its deficit to 54-50 with 2:34 left.

An Akinyooye triple with 2:02 to go pulled the Panthers to within 55-52, but that was as close as Adelphi would get, missing its final seven field goal attempts of the game. Saint Michael's, meanwhile, made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 28 seconds to hold on for the victory.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, February 2 when they travel to Pleasantville, New York for a 7:30 pm meeting with Pace.
