The Adelphi University women's basketball team hosted the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University this evening at the Center for Recreation and Sports. Franklin Pierce did not trail for the entire game for the 67-46 victory. The Ravens improve to 15-5 and 11-3 in the NE-10, while the Panthers drop to 7-11 and 4-10.
For the Panthers, freshman Jessica Kitrys led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds, while senior Ashley Caiafa tallied 13 points and scored her 1,000th career point in a Panther uniform in the process. Sophomore Samantha Breidenbach chipped in with seven points as well.
The Ravens came out strong in the first half and jumped out to an early 12-4 lead after a lay-up from Tiffany Johnson. Over the next three minutes of play Franklin Pierce went on a 9-3 run to take a 21-7 lead, highlighted by two three-pointers. FPU would then extend their lead to 18, 29-11, with 6:59 left, their largest of the game at the time. The Panthers would cut into the lead and get within 13, 29-16, on a Caiafa lay-up. Caiafa would then connect on a triple to cut the lead to 31-19 with 1:08 left on the clock, but the Ravens answered right back with a triple of their own from Brittany Martelle.
Just under 5:30 minutes into the second half the Ravens jumped out to a 21-point lead, 48-27, after a jumper from Kate McDonald. Franklin Pierce would maintain a comfortable cushion throughout the second half and the closes AU got was 16, 48-32, with 11:50 when Caiafa buried a three. The Ravens then extended their lead to 24 (their largest of the night), 60-36, with 6:55 left in regulation which was too much for the Panthers to overcome.
Franklin Pierce shot 41.8-percent from the field and handed out 19 assists as a team on 23 field goals made. The Ravens out-rebounded the Panthers 44-32 and turned them over 16 times. AU shot 33.3-percent from the field in the loss.
For the Ravens, Jewel White posted a double-double with 19 points and 12 boards, while Jessica Hurd chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 29 when they travel to Colchester, Vermont to take on St. Michael's College at 1:30 p.m.
