The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to fellow Northeast-10 member Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday, January 25. The Panthers stroked six triples in the first half, opening up a 21 point, 41-20, halftime lead on the way to a 69-53 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 11-7 overall and 7-7 in conference play, while Franklin Pierce falls to 5-14 and 3-11 in the NE-10.
Richard Byrd led all players with 21 points and he also pulled down six misses, while teammate David Akinyooye continued his strong play on the boards, pulling down a career-high 20 rebounds to go along with 14 points. Chris Ranglin also reached double figures, pouring in 19 points on an economical 8-11 shooting (3-5 from deep).
Franklin Pierce led in the early going, taking a three point, 12-9 lead on a lay-up at the 12:52 mark of the first half. From there the Panthers found their stride as a Richard Harkins three-pointer sparked a 19-0 run that was capped by a Ranglin lay-up with 6:27 on the clock, giving Adelphi a 16 point lead, 28-12.
The Ravens cut the margin to 11, 29-18 with 3:47 remaining in the period on a jumper. The Panthers responded with a 12-0 run, getting five points from Ranglin, to take a 41-18 lead with just 31 ticks left in the half, before taking a 41-20 lead into the intermission.
Adelphi would lead by as many as 25 points on two occasions in the second half, before Franklin Pierce would pull within 14, 67-53 with 3:19 on the clock before an Akinyooye lay-up gave Adelphi a 69-53 victory.
The Panthers return to the hardwood on Saturday, January 29 when they travel to Colchester, Vermont to take on St. Michael's at 3:30 pm.
